What to Watch For and How to Stay Healthy

It’s that time of year again—flu season is here.
As the weather cools down, we typically start seeing more cases of influenza in the community. The flu spreads easily and can make even healthy adults feel miserable for a week or more. Recognizing symptoms early and taking steps to prevent severe illness can make all the difference.

Flu symptoms can overlap with other common respiratory infections, such as colds or even COVID-19, but the flu tends to hit harder and faster. Common signs include sudden high fever, body aches, fatigue, sore throat, cough, and chills. Colds often come on slowly, while flu symptoms may develop overnight and leave you feeling wiped out almost immediately.

If you catch the flu, early treatment helps shorten recovery. Rest, fluids, and fever control are key, and antiviral medications can reduce symptom duration if started within the first couple of days. If you have underlying health conditions putting you at higher risk for a more severe course, it’s especially important to reach out early—prompt treatment can help prevent complications like pneumonia.

The best way to protect yourself is the annual flu shot. The vaccine reduces your risk of getting sick and, even more importantly, helps prevent severe infections that can lead to hospitalization. If you do end up catching the influenza even after vaccination it tends to be a more mild course of illness.
