Before the first whistle blows or the first goal is scored, there’s one “play” every student-athlete needs to make: the sports physical. It’s more than just a signature on a form—it’s the best way to ensure your child is ready to compete safely.
The Goal of the Game
A sports physical, or Pre-participation Physical Evaluation (PPE), is designed to identify any underlying medical conditions that could make playing sports risky. While schools require them, we view them as a vital health screening. Because our team has extensive experience in Emergency Medicine, we look at these exams through a specialized lens—understanding not just the “normal” but recognizing the subtle cues that could indicate more investigation is needed.
What Happens During the Exam?
During the physical, we dive into two main areas: medical history and the physical exam. We discuss everything from past concussions and fainting spells to family history of heart issues. The physical portion includes checking blood pressure, heart rate, and lung function, as well as a thorough musculoskeletal screening. We want to make sure your athlete’s joints, bones, and muscles are prepared for the repetitive stress of their specific sport.
When We Dig Deeper
Most athletes sail through their physicals with no issues. However, if we detect an irregular heart rhythm, a history of significant concussions, or other concerning findings, we may refer the patient for further testing, such as an EKG or a visit to a specialist.
The Watkinsville Urgent Care Advantage
We know how busy the sports season can be for parents. To help you get back to the field faster, we’ve streamlined our entire process. You can register your athlete ahead of your visit and pre-fill all necessary paperwork online before you even walk through our doors. This minimizes wait times and ensures our time together is focused entirely on your child’s health and safety, rather than a clipboard.
Reassurance You Can Trust
Whether your child is a middle schooler trying out for the first time or a varsity athlete, we are here to provide a comprehensive evaluation. If we find a complex condition that requires more than urgent care can provide, we have the expertise to guide you to the right emergency or specialist resources.
