UTI? Do I Need to Get This Checked?

October 6, 2026

You just went to the bathroom, but you already feel like you need to go again—and now it burns. Could it be a UTI? Here’s what those symptoms may mean and when to get checked.

Urinary symptoms can interrupt everything from a work meeting to a good night’s sleep. They can also feel awkward to bring up. At Watkinsville Urgent Care, these are everyday conversations, and there’s no need to be embarrassed about asking for help.

What does a UTI feel like?

A urinary tract infection, or UTI, can affect different parts of the urinary system. A bladder infection is one common type. Symptoms may include burning when you urinate, needing to go more often or urgently, and pressure or discomfort in the lower abdomen. You might feel an intense urge even when very little urine comes out.

Urine may look cloudy or contain blood, but a change in odor alone doesn’t prove an infection. Concentrated urine from not drinking enough fluids can smell stronger, too.

Does burning always mean a UTI?

Not necessarily. Irritation, genital infections, and some sexually transmitted infections can cause similar symptoms. That’s why it helps to explain the whole picture—including itching, discharge, new products, or possible exposures—even if it feels unrelated.

If burning, urgency, or frequent bathroom trips are new, contact a clinician rather than assuming the cause. Mention any chance of pregnancy, previous UTIs, and recent antibiotic use. Those details can affect the evaluation and treatment.

What happens at a visit?

We’ll ask about your symptoms and medical history and determine what testing makes sense. Watkinsville Urgent Care offers in-house urinalysis and pregnancy tests, which can provide clues such as white blood cells or blood in the urine. We also have access to a comprehensive list of tests for sexually transmitted infections if needed.

A urine culture may also be recommended to identify bacteria and help guide treatment. Culture results usually take a few days, so they aren’t the same as an immediate urine test. Your clinician will decide whether to begin treatment while waiting for results.

Can I just drink water or cranberry juice?

Drinking enough water can support hydration, but it isn’t a substitute for evaluation when you have symptoms. If you have a prescribed fluid restriction, follow your clinician’s guidance.

Cranberry products are not a treatment for an existing bladder infection. Bacterial bladder infections commonly need antibiotics; the choice depends on your situation. Take medication exactly as prescribed, and contact your clinician if you’re having side effects or trouble taking it.

When is it more urgent?

Seek same-day care if urinary symptoms come with fever, chills, pain in your side or back beneath the ribs, or vomiting. These can signal a kidney infection. Visible blood in the urine also deserves prompt evaluation.

Contact a clinician promptly for suspected UTI symptoms during pregnancy, in children or men, or if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system.

If treatment has started but symptoms worsen or aren’t improving within 48 hours, follow up. Repeated infections also deserve a conversation about what may be contributing.

At Watkinsville Urgent Care, we can evaluate urinary symptoms, discuss testing, and help you find the right next step. You don’t have to keep planning your day around the nearest bathroom. We also have the most common UTI antibiotics available in house so you can leave with your medications in hand!

Quick Tips

- Pay attention to the pattern. Burning, urgency, and frequent urination deserve a conversation with a clinician.
- Don’t diagnose by smell alone. Strong-smelling urine doesn’t automatically mean a UTI.
- Hydrate, but don’t rely on home remedies. Water and cranberry products don’t replace needed treatment.
- Know the warning signs. Fever, chills, side or back pain, or vomiting need same-day attention.
- Follow up if you’re not improving. Worsening symptoms or no improvement within 48 hours of treatment should be reassessed.
- We have the most common treatments and antibiotics for UTI available in the office- skip the pharmacy trip!
